Give a Gift of Glogg

The holiday season brings with it a spirit of joy, best enjoyed with loved ones over a smorgasbord of holiday dishes and drinks. Glogg – a Nordic version of mulled wine – is an ideal gift to party hosts or for party hosts or friends who enjoy entertaining. For a non-alcoholic version, substitute apple juice or cider and eliminate the added sugar


  • Long spiral peel from ½ an orange
  • 1 tsp. whole cloves (approximate)
  • Baking sheet
  • Âľ cup dark raisins
  • 1/3 cup blanched almonds
  • 2 cinnamon sticks, broken into 2- or 3-inch pieces
  • ½ tsp. ground cardamom
  • 12 sugar cubes
  • Small bowl
  • Food-safe cellophane gift bag
  • Card-stock gift tag
  • Gel pen (optional)
  • Ribbon
  • 750 ml. bottle of dry red wine


  1. Prepare the orange peel by pushing the cloves into them. Set the clove-studded peel on a small baking sheet and bake for 45 minutes at 350° F. This dries the peel to prepare it for a packaged mix.

  2. Place the raisins, almonds, cinnamon and cardamom in a small bowl, shaking or stirring gently to blend.

  3. Add the sugar cubes and orange peel, stir gently and transfer the glogg mix to a food-safe cellophane gift bag. (Sugar shapes – stars or trees, for instance – can be used as an adorable holiday-themed twist on traditional sugar cubes.)

  4. Instructions on a gift tag help ensure the gift recipient will actually use the glogg mix.

    Instructions: Pour one bottle of dry red wine into a stainless steel or enamel saucepan; then stir in the contents of the glogg mix. Simmer over low heat for 5 minutes, stirring gently every minute or so. Ladle the mixture into heatproof mugs, including almonds and raisins in each mug. Enjoy with ginger snaps, shortbread cookies or other mildly sweet desserts.

  5. Print out a small sticker that says “glogg wine,” matching the gift tag; then adhere it somewhere on the wine bottle so the recipient remembers that the mix and wine are part of a set.

  6. Tie the gift tag onto the top of the glogg mix package with a piece of thin ribbon; then tie the ribbon into a bow.
